The Fund is setup overseas and has two vehicles of investment in India through the Asset Reconstruction Company and/or the Alternate Investment Fund. The potential investments under the Fund include non-performing loans/assets and companies under insolvency. Development of the ESMS involved multiple interactions with the legal and operations heads to understand this unique nature of investment and design a system that can assess and manage the associated environmental and social risks. The definition of risk also varied from conventional systems as the Fund was seeking to invest in companies that are in the ‘red’. The system was designed in accordance with IFC Performance Standard 1 requirements with inputs from the IFC ESG team as IFC was one of the investors in the Fund. Inputs on the Draft ESMS were taken from the entire team through a virtual training cum workshop.
