Gamesa Wind Turbines Pvt. Ltd. (now Gamesa Renewables Pvt. Ltd.) is a developer of wind farms in India. EMC has been engaged by the company for identification and assessment of environmental and social (E&S) sensitivities of prospective wind farm locations (multiple) at the project identification stage.

Geospatial Analysis using GIS and Remote sensing techniques is conducted in order to understand the Land cover composition of the site and to identify the eco-sensitive areas (National/Protected forests, Wild life Sanctuaries, Wetlands, Important Bird Areas, etc.), stream network, and other receptors like waterbodies, settlements, cultural heritage and archeologically important places, defense installations, etc. In addition to assessment of E&S sensitive receptors, ground water development status; access to infrastructure; socio-economic analysis of the study area based on census data; and meteorology (rainfall, climatic pattern, wind speed) of the study area were analyzed.

Furthermore, buffers are identified for each sensitive receptor to reduce the E&S impacts of wind farm development and determining the actual available area for the wind farm. Noise Modeling and Shadow Flicker analysis for various wind turbine generator locations (WTGs) are conducted to assess the impacts of WTG operations on key sensitive receptors such as human settlements and eco-sensitive habitats. Based on the modelling outputs, the WTGs are relocated, wherever needed. Professional software like ArcGIS 10.1, WindPro 3.0, and Google Earth Pro 7.0 are extensively used for conducting the assessment.
