Mumbai has been manually operating 22 air quality monitoring stations operated by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM). The World Bank had a project with the Government of Maharashtra and the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority in the area of improving Public Transport of the City. They expected the transport project to reduce the air pollution and were keen on measuring the same. There was a need to use the monitoring stations which were lying under utilised; some were manually operated. EMC was contracted to study, analyse and draw conclusions. This was to identify better sites for the stations, to decide on whether to upgrade to automation etc. EMC conducted field audits and two consultation workshops with experts. EMC also designed the required financing by the World Bank. This is the only study in the country involving optimizing of air quality monitoring network.
