Evolution of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) over past four decades has led to its deepening as well as elevation to mainstream environmental considerations in policy, planning, programs and projects. Areas such as Social Impact Assessment, Health Impact Assessment, Technology Assessment are few examples of deepening while Regional EIA, Sectoral EIA, Strategic EIA are examples of elevation. Sustainability Appraisal (SA) today is the most current "avatar" of EIA where appraisal looks at economic, environmental as well as social aspects in an integrated manner - not only to meet compliance or minimize related risks but enhance outcomes, effectiveness and overall sustainability of the intervention. EMC has been advocating the SA approach to our clients. In this approach, EMC embeds considerations such as climate change (mitigation as well as adaptation), social inclusion and livelihood creation, innovation and technology adoption.
